Spotlight on: Dr. Vito Carabetta, volunteer physician with Duchesne Clinic

Specialty: Physical Medicine and Rehabilitation. "I first became interested in physical medicine because of my sister's rehabilitation experience when she developed Guillain-Barré Syndrome."

What brought you to Duchesne Clinic? "I've been with Duchesne Clinic for 12 years; I started because a Sister of Charity came to speak at my church. I find volunteering at Duchesne Clinic rewarding because the patients really need the healthcare we provide."

What do you do when you aren't volunteering at Duchesne Clinic? "I volunteer in uniform with the United States Air Force."

Spotlight on: Dr. Miralda Moreno

Since opening Moreno Family Dentistry nine years ago, Dr. Miralda Moreno has worked to give back to the community that she came to know as a dental student. One summer she worked for longtime Kansas City, KS dentist, Dr. Thomas Jones, and he became her mentor and friend. It was Dr. Jones who encouraged her to open her own practice in KCK.

Unsure of how this idea fit into her plans, events lead Dr. Moreno to stay. Now when she looks back she sees there was a plan, just not hers. Things happened the way they did to lead her to this work.

With a background in public health, Dr. Moreno knows the complexities and challenges underserved patients face, and has designed her practice to help. The emergency care her office provides to Duchesne patients is one example. Many are diabetic, making them more prone to gum disease. In turn, gum disease can make it harder to control blood sugars. It’s a cycle she wants to help break.

Dr. Moreno has chosen to be a part of our community and to help those in need. She feels blessed to be in a position to do so, and we feel blessed to have her as part of our team.
